Netflix Guide: Series and movies to train German

Watching series and movies in German is not just fun – it’s a highly effective way to improve your listening skills – it’s a highly effective way to improve your listening skills, expand your vocabulary, and get familiar with the rhythm of the language.

But here’s the catch: if you choose something too difficult, you’ll get frustrated. Too easy, and you won’t progress. That’s why I’ve organised these recommendations by level, with tips on how to use them for learning – without turning Netflix into homework.
A1

Absolute Beginners

At this level, aim for simple language, slower dialogues, and familiar contexts.
You can watch with German audio + subtitles in your native language first, then switch to German subtitles.

Recommendations:
Pettersson und Findus (animated) – Simple vocabulary, perfect for getting used to German pronunciation.
Benjamin Blümchen (film) – Classic children’s character, very easy to follow.
Der kleine Nick – Sweet and slow-paced; also great for families learning together.

💡 Learning tip: Pause after short phrases and repeat them aloud. Don’t worry if you only understand 20–30% at first – you’re training your ear.
A2

Beginners with basics

Now you can handle everyday vocabulary and short conversations. Choose light comedies or family films with clear speech.

Recommendations:
Bibi & Tina – Teen adventure series, colourful and easy to follow.
Vicky the Viking (Wickie und die starken Männer) – Animated, slow-paced speech.
Rico, Oskar und die Tieferschatten – Family film with simple but natural dialogue.

💡 Learning tip: Turn on German subtitles to link sounds to spelling. You’ll start recognising patterns.
B1

Intermediate

You can follow most standard speech with some effort. This is the perfect level to move into teen dramas, romantic comedies, and mystery series.

Recommendations:
Dark – Netflix’s first German original; great for listening, but keep subtitles on at first due to fast dialogue.
How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast) – Youth slang + modern cultural references.
Biohackers – University drama/thriller with clear pronunciation.
Isi & Ossi – Romantic comedy with lots of everyday language.

💡 Learning tip: Write down 5–10 useful phrases per episode and reuse them in your own speaking.
B2

Upper-intermediate

You can handle natural-speed speech, including some slang and regional accents. Now you can enjoy crime dramas, political thrillers, and period pieces.

Recommendations:
Dogs of Berlin – Crime drama with Berlin slang and realistic dialogue.
Babylon Berlin – Historical drama with rich vocabulary and different accents.
Freud – Dark, psychological, with Austrian German.

💡 Learning tip: Watch once with subtitles, then rewatch without to train comprehension at full speed.
C1-C2

Advanced

You’re ready for fast-paced, nuanced language with idioms, sarcasm, and cultural references.

Recommendations:
4 Blocks – Berlin gang drama, rich in colloquial language.
Der Pass – Austrian-German crime series with dialects.
Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo – Intense, emotional storytelling with authentic street language.
